Disappointments of 2016

It’s always tough to choose bad films in a year because there’re way too many. But when a promising film with great directors and actors don’t live up to the expectations, it hurts even bad than a terrible film. Fortunately or unfortunately I didn’t watch many of those terrible films. So this one’s gonna be a short post. There’s a blockbuster in this list as well as disasters.

Disclaimer : Opinions expressed here are purely personal. Not intended to hurt or trigger anger in anyone. As I said, these are not terrible films. These are films I really looked forward to, but disappointed after watching.

Here’s the list (in the order of least to most disappointing) :

Janatha Garage

Before you start abusing me, just run the film in your head once along with Mirchi and Srimanthudu. JG is nothing but Mirchi(Leaving family because of violence)ย + Srimanthudu(Social angle) which is completely fine given that it’s a commercial film and meant for wider audience. But you can clearly see the dip in writing and emotional impact compared to Siva’s previous films. But I must mention the things which worked for me – Rajiv Kanakala’s sequence, the intention to blend social issue in a commercial film with a star like Tarak and of course “Pakka Local” ๐Ÿ˜›

Baar Baar Dekho

I felt this one was not as bad as it was panned by critics. The repetitive time travel sequences and few flaws in narrative may be the reasons for its failure. Though Siddharth and Katrina are better compared to their previous films, given the emotional content of the film, their acting fell short. Positives are – First 15-20 minutes with childhood sequences (“Kho Gaye”), intriguing premise, incredible costumes (like obvious for a Dharma film) and yeah.. “Kala Chashma”.

Mirzyamirzya-movie-poster

Coming from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the man who made Rang de Basanti, Delhi-6 & Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, I had many expectations on this punjabi eternal folklore love story. There’re many good things to talk about Mirzya – it’s award deserving camera work by Pawel Dyllus, detailed production design by Acropolis. Every frame was like a painting. Narrative is completely different which gives us a feel of Rang de Basanti kinda screenplay. All this could’ve lead to another classic like Mehra’s previous films if not for the weak story. Mirzya was totally let down by its weak story. I hope and I’m sure Rakeysh will come back with his best again.

Mohenjo Daro

This is by far the most disappointing hindi film of 2016. Just like Rakeysh Mehra, Ashutosh is the reason why movies used to make sense when other film-makers are making films just for money. Be it Lagaan, Swades, Jodhaa.. Ashutosh made some of the most memorable films of Hindi Cinema, but Mohenjo Daro was a total let down just because of its weak writing. Positives are – Hrithik and A.R. Rahman’s music. Hope Ashutosh will be back with a bang again ๐Ÿ™‚

Sardaar Gabbar Singh

sardaar

Given the terrific first installment in the Gabbar Singh franchise, I expected it to be at least somewhere near that though I’m not a Pawan’s fan. But it’s the worst writing that not just ruined the franchise but led to disappointment even among the fans. Given Pawan’s craze, it’s just one right film that can turn the tables again.

Brahmotsavam

For me, this is one of the most disappointing films of the decade. It made me badly miss SVSC. I always wonder why and how Mahesh accepted this film. Movies like these which are blindly accepted by him just because the director gave him a great/successful movie in the past are the reasons why Mahesh didn’t become the biggest star in South India despite some great commercial and experimental movies. His past record shows thatย after every disaster he gave industry hits. Hope the same happens with his next with Murugadoss.

Few other disappointing ones I couldn’t even finish watching :

Rock on 2

Shivaay

Some of you may wonder why Nannaku Prematho was not in the list. I honestly liked the film. The only thing that didn’t work for me was packaging a real emotional subject with Sherlock kinda thriller which reduced the emotional impact. Another reason for this little bias could be because of Sukumar ๐Ÿ˜›

So, what are your biggest disappointments? Do mention in the comments ๐Ÿ™‚
